From the estate of Mrs. Thelma Rule comes this treasured find. A very rare book indeed. It's not on Bookfinder. It's not on Amazon, at least not any are available there. And the only photo I can find of it on the web is one I put up a month or so back when I first began researching it. Google searches tell me 3 libraries in the world hold this rare volume, but the same vehicle only lists 2 libraries – Brown University and the University of California at Santa Barbara. Nothing out there for price comparison. Opening bid is same as for two Squires volumes of Robert E. Howard poetry I just listed. As rare as it is, I believe it to be a quite reasonable opening bid.
Contents of this volume, in case there's anyone reading this who doesn't already know, appear largely to be an offering of items for sale from the collection of H.P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith. Items are described in great detail and provenance given. Roy A. Squires often notes in the descriptions when he has personal knowledge or a personal experience relating to an HPL or CAS item's provenance or history. Item 102 also involves Edgar Allen Poe. No date is given in the printing, but it is 1973 as determined by both research and the fact that “A Song of the Naked Lands” was available when this was printed but “The Gold and the Grey” was not yet printed. Guaranteed vintage, authentic, first and only edition.

Condition: Fairly pristine. Minor aging to cover only. Inside, including illustrations, crisp and bright. Has a couple of corner bumps. No rips, tears, or marks. Collector owned and collector worthy.

Catalog 8, H.P. Lovecraft and Friends' Books and Autographs

This exquisitely printed (of course) Roy Squires publication, H.P. Lovecraft and The Lovecraft Circle Books & Autographs was sent out October 21, 1974 to HPL fans and collectors. It lists "Books and Pamphlets, Manuscripts and Letters, Serials and Oddments." This catalog has many of Lovecraft's letters to Clark Ashton Smith. Included is a greeting card printed on heavy textured card stock and signed by Roy A. Squires. Besides the original mailing envelope, we'll include a copy of HPL's portrait by Joe Wehrle, Jr.The greeting card says, "Greetings" on the front and inside it says, "& may you discover in 1975 all that eluded your search this year" and signed, "Roy A. Squires." Here's the last item in the catalog of 160 items:
Pamphlets from my private press. I have begun publication of a new series of Smith's previously unpublished poems. The first of these, The Titans in Tartarus, is now available at $6. Titles of the next two will be A Song from Hell and The Dream God's Realm. The series will continue for at least 6 volumes. And for the record I should say that there is also a special Manuscript Edition, in effect o.p. on publication for all copies are reserved for subscribers.Yet available is Roy Bradbury's That Son of Richard III, ordinary edition, at $7.

The catalog measures almost 9 1/2" by 6" with 20 pages. The card measures 5 3/8" by 4 1/8". The envelope measures 9 1/2" by 6 1/2".

1968 "A Bibliographic Catalog of the Largest Collection Ever Offered For Sale of the Works of Clark Ashton Smith and H.P. Lovecraft" by Roy A. Squires.

H.P. Lovecraft article neatly taken from "The Esquire", January 1946: "The Ten-Cent Ivory Tower" by John Wilstach.

January, 1966 "Herald Review", featuring "H.P. Lovecraft: Genius of the Macabre" by Laurence Goldstein.

April, 1947 "Saturday Review of Literature". H.P. Lovecraft is mentioned in the article "The Phoenix Nest".

All of these items were previously a part of William Easton Loutitt's private library. Loutitt was a noted collector and the official archivist for the John Hay Library at Brown University from the 1950's through the 70's. A loose Loutitt's private library book plate can be found within the manilla envelope containing the article from "The Esquire".

All ephemera has been stored in protective manila envelopes, which are also labeled for convience.

re: "The Horror from the Hills"

A brief but interesting note from A.D. to his friend and friend to Howard Phillips Lovecraft - Frank Belknap Long, requesting of him a manuscript copy of "The Horror From the Hills". to prepare it for publication from Arkham House. Now unfortunately I do not have the follow up correspondence regarding the $50 fee for having the manuscript retyped, but I would assume (knowing Long's constant financial deprivation) that Long no doubt retyped it himself!

Letter is signed with Derleth's customary squiggle. Light staining as this was housed in Long's unkempt apartment for years.

Following the death of August Derleth in 1971, Arkham House spiraled nearly out of control for a few years. James Turner became managing editor and indeed "managed" to right the ship, bringing on board some major talents from the pool of younger modern writers and artists, and at the same time keeping the older more traditional Arkham House scriviners on board. This letter to noted bookseller, publisher, printer and bibliographer Roy Squires, brings to light the early negotiations with author Frank Belknap Long regarding his book "In Mayan Splendor".

Nearly 18 years after Lovecraft's death, Australian fans recalled Lovecraft in this commemorative. The Weird Tales writers - fictioneers as E Hoffmann Price called them - were fondly remembered.

The seller (epegana) states: "THE FOURTH AUSTRALIAN SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION" - Mar. 18-20, 1955 // In memory of Stanley G. Weinbaum, Abraham Merritt, Howard P. Lovecraft, Robert E. HowardI offer the official "Souvenir Booklet of The Fourth Australian Science Fiction Convention" held in 1955 in Sydney, Australia. The booklet is twenty-four pages in length with stiff-paper stapled covers and lists all committee members, all programming for the Convention, and a page for autographs.This was Roy A. Squires' copy and bears his signature. Squires did not attend but did place an advertisement in the booklet for his publication "The Science Fiction Advertiser".

Historical Note on HPL letters to REH

Signed Letter from L. Sprague de Camp to Roy A. Squires, 28 November, 1977

While he was researching his biography of Robert E. Howard ("Dark Valley Destiny") L. Sprague de Camp was able to talk to the last surviving individuals who knew Robert E. Howard personally. Obviously as relates in this letter, de Camp met a "relative" of REH's who had in their possession a collection of twenty-four postcards from H. P. Lovecraft to REH and de Camp was acting as broker in an attempt to sell the collection. As compensation deC would receive no monies, but information that he would use for his book . Being a noted specialist in Fantasy & Science Fiction - especially relating to both HPL & REH - Roy A. Squires was approached as a serious buyer. The "auction" began at $20.80 per card and unfortunately I never found out who won this collection - it was not Roy Squires!

The xerox copies of two postcards listed as "(incl.)" are not present.
Historically interesting little tidbit relating to both HPL & REH.

Lovecraft Comes to Australia

By 1952, the Australians had their first SF conference, but the Weird Tales Gang still had a lot of strength. In 1952, Lovecraft had been gone nearly 15 years, but was not a dim memory. The booklet (see image above, and text of the seller below) was dedicated, in part, to HPL.

Science Fiction has always been extremely popular in Australia, but it wasn't until well after WWII - March 22, 1952 in Sydney - that the "Auzzies" realized their 1st Convention. The SF Commitee consisted of Chairman William D. Veney, Secretary Graham B. Stone, Treasurer Nick Solntseff, Auctioneer Arthur Haddon, and Film coordinator Lex Banning. The Convention extended over three days and included films, an auction, various programs of what is Science Fiction and The Futurian Society meeting. This program booklet also contains many congratulatory pages from fellow enthusiasts in America - Forrest Ackerman, Roy A. Squires, Mel Korshak, Lloyd Eshbach and the booklet was dedicated in memoriam to H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, Abraham Merritt, and Stanley Weinbaum.

Phil Garland was a remarkable individual - writer, poet, wit, bibliographer, noted literary figure in the Pacific Northwest ... and collector. Phil first collected H. P. Lovecraft and he collected not only books but manuscripts and incidental materials. He sold his Lovecraft collection thru International Bookfinders complete for $4850 a princely sum back in the '70's but a pittance these days when you see what was in the collection - Barlow bound "Shunned House", "Cats of Ulthar", "History of the Necronomicon", "HPL" - the Stickeny booklet, and HPL's Arkham House books. My friend Phil then bought an entire Clark Ashton Smith collection from - his favorite writer - from Roy A. Squires.

Galpin Letter to Squires After Derleth's Death

Interesting letter of over 600 words from one of H. P. Lovecraft's oldest friends (they began corresponding in 1918 - "Galpin is the most brilliant, accurate, steel-cold intellect I have ever encountered" - HPL) to publisher, bookseller & bibliographer, Roy A. Squires discussing the disposing of Galpin's Lovecraft collection. This letter is of interest to Arkham House collectors in that Galpin notes..."by now you must have heard of the sudden death of Augie Derleth last Sunday, from a heart attack...I have no idea what is going on or what is planned about the future of Arkham House...his loss comes as a shock to me and that he was a fine person and warm friend...I doubt Wandrei can carry on effectively but we shall see..."

Other topics of discussion include another HPL friend Samuel Loveman's health and the selling of his collection to Gerry de la Ree.

Very informative & entertaining reading.

Frank Long Letter to Roy Squires.

It's seeming obvious with each cycle of auctions that much of the Roy Squires archive descended to Terence McVicker at some point. Through this some very late information can be seen about the "Lovecraft Group" and their eventual passing. Here is a rare prize from Frank Long.

LETTER FROM:FRANK BELKNAP LONG TO ROY A. SQUIRES
Frank Belknap Long was not only a fine writer in the old Weird Tales tradition, but one of Howard Phillips Lovecraft's greatest friends. In later years he sold his Lovecraft letters and his entire collection to just try to make ends meet. Roy A. Squires printed his "Marriage of Sir John de Maundeville" not only because he liked the poem, but it would throw FBL a few much needed bucks. Squires also paid Long to sign numerous books. As suggested in the letter Long was under enormous financial pressure ... Signed in ball-point "Frank".

Galpin parts with his HPL correspondence (3 Sept 1970)

"My old friend and neighbor August Derleth has given me your name as a collector of Lovecraftiana....I recently retrieved from Derleth the sheaf of papers I had left with him years ago, and am planning to orgnize what I have...with the double aim:

1. Of selling some of the material and

2. Of writing out more fully than in my "Shuttered Room" article

...the above mentioned sheaf of papers consists mainly of 28 autographs letters from HPL

...8 post-cards, and a wedding announcement

....In addition, I have a certain number of books or periodicals

...a copy of "The Outsider & Others" plus other printed material I would sell".

Alfred Galpin was one of H. P. Lovecraft's earliest and closest friends and a famous member of his "Lovecraft Circle". The letter is signed "Alfred Galpin".

LETTER FROM L. SPRAGUE de CAMPto ROY A. SQUIRES re: H. P. LOVECRAFT BIOGRAPHY

In 1975 L. Sprague de Camp's book- "LOVECRAFT: A Biography" - was published by Doubleday. De Camp never knew Lovecraft and did not come to his fiction until ten years after the author's death - "I read the Science Fiction magazines and was not a reader of 'Weird Tales'. De Camp however was a tireless researcher intensively researching for two years and was fortunate enough to contact many of HPL's friends & associates by letter, telephone, and face-to-face in some instances, gaining a firsthand familiarity now lost to us. Publisher, bibliographer, friend to Clark Ashton Smith and one of Sonia Greene Lovecraft's last friends, Roy A. Squires was approached by de Camp for copies of HPL's letters to Clark Ashton Smith.

Squires declined; copies of these letters are currently being assembled & transcribed at Brown University.

This letter of one-and-a half pages is signed in full by de Camp.When the book appeared in 1975 it was panned by Lovecraft devotees because of de Camp's criticisms, conclusions and "amateur psychological analysis" of HPL's work habits, his lifestyle, his personality & unusual upbringing. If you've read S. T. Joshi's bio, you'll find variant approaches, conclusions & information in de Camp's book that deserves your attentions. If you're an HPL enthusiast you can come to your own conclusions.The scan is intentionally incomplete, but the letter is complete to the winner.

FRANK BELKNAP LONGADVERTISING FLYER WITH PHOTOS This four-page advertising flyer was issued by his wife Lyda Arco Long to help bolster author Frank Belknap Long's flagging career. Long's association with H. P. Lovecraft forms the base of the presentation as he is shown in two photographs with HPL. This was once in the collection of Roy A. Squires and Long has penned across the top "Just thought you might be interested in this brochure". An unusual piece of ephemera for your Lovecraft or Long collection!

Catalog 14 for instance offers a rare opportunity to procure one of Lovecraft's scarcest pieces, his "Battle That Ended the Century" , equally intriguing is the offering of a typed signed letter from Robert E. Howard; Lord Dunsany is present with a proof copy of "Mr. Jorkens Remembers Africa" with sixty-two corrections in the author's hand.Anecdotes and information in abundance!

Unusual Roy Squires Edition of Cats of Ulthar

{from imagine-fx collection} Seller states: This beautiful item from Roy Squires private press is described by Roy as follows: “For no better reason than that for several years I wanted to do it, I have printed H. P. Lovecraft’s bedtime story, The cats of Ulthar. This pamphlet consists of eight pages of printed text from American Uncial types upon Gutenburg Laid paper, sewn into covers of De Wint, a paper hand made by Barcham Green. The edition is 200 numbered copies.” This hand set and tied limited edition is number 174 of 200. Printed in April and May of 1979. This rare item has been stored flat in a sealed box. Fine to Very Fine condition.
Comes in a protective envelope which has some toning.

Rare Arkham House related letter

The seller (epegana) states: SIGNED LETTER from NELSON BOND Letter dated 14 September '78 upon the author's personal stationery from Arkham House author Nelson Bond to bookseller, publisher, Roy A. Squires. Nelson Bond was himself also a noted bookseller & collector, being an expert in the fiction of James Branch Cabell. Bond was also a most intelligent wit & raconteur - not to mention the author of two Arkham House books.The original posted envelope is also included. {OK, this is a stretch for a Lovecraft blog, but still of interest - CP}
