Artistic Representation of Ithaqua

The seller states: Up for auction is an original illustration by Arkham House cover artist, Herb Arnold. This is one of two Arnolds I have up for auction this week. This one depicts "Ithaqua, the Wind Walker", used by August Derleth in stories. This was published in the book "HPL: A Tribute to Howard Phillips Lovecraft" edited by Meade and Penny Frierson. (1972) The book itself was a collection of essays and memoirs by friends and fans of H.P. Lovecraft. It is also illustrated throughout by various artists including Herb Arnold. The piece is approx. 9 1/4" x 5" and is inscribed, on the back, to Stuart Schiff. It is dated (Dec.1971) and signed in full by Arnold.

Found this in L Currey's inventory. Unfortunately, I know nothing of Maurer. I'm sure someone reading will add a comment.

Lovecraft's Legacy: 1972 (HPL, A LOVECRAFT TRIBUTE)

{This is a rather obscure item of Lovecraftiana but it is not 70 years old as far as I can tell. In fact if one goes to one reads this, "summer of 1972, and the first printing of 35 numbered hardbounds and 1000 self-covered volumes was sold out by summers' end. In September 1972, 500 copies of a 2nd printing were ordered, since the printer would only hold the plates for 6 months. These do not qualify as a 2nd edition, just as second printing because the only changes were two removals: the $3.00 on the top of page 2 and the note at the bottom of page 3 as to the 1000 limited print run.". (More, click here.) So, according to the editors, there were a few more than 2000 copies printed in 1972.}
The seller staes in part:
H P L : A tribute to Howard Phillips Lovecraft. (1890-1937). Entire contents copyright by Meade & Penny Frierson. All rights, including translation into other languages, reserved. This booklet is a non-commercial publication, published in the United States of America. No subscriptions; no future issues are planned. The artwork, articles and poetry are intrepretations and commentary upon such and acknowledgment is given to ARKHAM HOUSE, Publishers, Sauk City, Wisconsin...(the rest is about copyright and reproduction rights). so this is a 1 shot magazine or fanzine. {see notes above - CP} PUBLISTED IN A LIMITED EDITION OF 1000 COPIES INCLUDING 35 B0UND COPIES WHICH ARE NUMBERED ON A SPECIAL PAGE. 144 pages, magazine size. Mint, no marks, no tears, no stains, even the staples are not rusted. Maybe the white is not absolutely perfect but this mag is 70 years old. Some of the art credit: Steve Fabian, Tim Kirk, Dany Frolich, Herb Arnold. Some of the articles Robert E. Howard, James Wade, Hert Arnold, J Ramsey Campbell, Stuart Schiff, John L. McInnis III, Robert Bloch, Frank Belknap Long, E Hoffman Price, Fritz Leiber, George T. Wetzl, more.

Rare Lovecraft Article: 1972

The seller states:

LOVECRAFTIMANIA AT BROWN. An Article in BROWN ALUMNI MONTHLY, February 1972 issue, Vol. 72, No. 5. The article is uncredited, and is presumably written by the editors of the magazine. An article on Lovecraft, reproducing his first published photo, the cover of a WEIRD TALES magazine, a photo of the 18th Century Graveyard of St. John's Church, Providence, RI, a photo of the house at 135 Benefit Street (THE SHUNNED HOUSE), and a photo of HPL's house at 66 College St. Prints in full the Lovecraft poem "In a Sequestered Churchyard where Once Poe Walked". , also contains the article "The Day that Lovecraft's House was Moved", and a poem, "The Scene in Providence, by Keith Waldrop. The magazine runs 56 pages, the HPL material is 8 pages in total.
A rare item, I've never seen another one. With the Lovecraft-inspired bookplate of noted collector Douglas R. Vining affixed to the inner front cover. Address label and postmark (no stamps) on rear cover, no folds, very slight wear and a touch loose around the staples. A solid very good copy.

Lovecraft's Legacy: 1972

35 years after Lovecraft's death, the next wave of fandom exploded during the Vietnam War era. Chrispy recalls reading a lot of science fiction, espcially A. E. van Vogt - a mimic sometimes of HPL. In a high school biology classroom, a substitute teacher had a copy of Lovecraft - but Chrispy was not interested then. In college it was all Robert E. Howard all the time. Then, 30 years later I crossed paths with HPL and I was hooked.

Here is an image of a rare 'zine: SHADOW #18 (1972). 6 1/2 x 8 and 36 pages. It included articles about fantasy and horror literature, including about H.P. Lovecraft. Articles by Ramsey Campbell, Brian Stableford and others. Art by Alan Hunter and others.
