A Barlow Story in a rare fanzine

From epegana's collection: POLARIS Vol. 1, No. 2, March, 1940 Edited by Paul Freehafer Paul Freehafer was a wonderful character: well-known fan & fanzine publisher, Math-whizz, writer, collector and friend to Clark Ashton Smith & the young Ray Bradbury (SEE MY OTHER FANZINE LISTING THIS WEEK!). Freehafer was one of the minds working on an element in the production of the Atomic Bomb when he died tragically prematurely of a congenital heart defect while still in his twenties. His fanzine "POLARIS" was one of the best of its era.This issue features the single-page fantasy short story by Ray Bradbury & Bob Tucker entitled "The Maiden of Jirbu". There is also a story by H. P. Lovecraft friend - Robert H. Barlow entitled "The Root Gatherers"....not to mention cover art by Hannes Bok!Folded for mailing else a nice copy of a rare item! Near fine condition

A Lovecraft Story in Science Fiction Reader No 3

I don't particularly collect pristine antiquarian items because I like to handle and read and study them. I'd not want to do that for valuable collectables or museum pieces. I was a bit changrined, because I wrote to a very nice library recently asking some research questions (which I would have gladly paid) and offered some scans of my items that they apparently didn't have. Nothing. Nada. No response. *sigh* I chalked it up to my small letter being of no consequnce to some busy, prestigious librarian and this school in the North East.

Anyway, I digress. Here are some scans of a 1952 pulp 'zine of reprints. I think the scans show how the paper has darkened, though it was probably pretty beige when it was fresh off the presses. It is kind of eerie to think that it's 56 years old - older than I am. Heh, I'm starting to get a bit frayed around the edges too these days come to think of it. More below ... first enjoy the pix.

OK, I found some neat stuff on the net about this magazine and its origins. There are a lot of collectors and many now have blogs on magazines such as these. Kudos to all of them, and YOU who are fans. I know many of you have your own blogs, and you post to other forums, so you know how much effort it is to scan something in, do the research, write it coherently and I appreciate that you forgive my frequent, bleary-eyed, midnight and early A.M. typos.

I really got this one for the Hannes Bok story and the Frank Belknap Long Story. The bonus is the story about ants. I'm a huge fan of Dr. E. O. Wilson and have his books - a scientist who has spent his life studying ants. A highlight of my life was to listen to him lecture one time.

The original Avon Fantasy Reader series ran eighteen issues ostensibly published monthly but in actuality it came out irregularly. In 1952 Wollheim began a companion publication, the Avon Science Fiction Reader which focused on sf reprints. It ran only three issues before Wollheim left Avon for Ace Books and both series were abandoned by Avon.

Rare Original Art of Hannes Bok

Hannes Bok was a true illustrative genius. Here is the original Hannes Bok artwork (as published in the May 1944 issue of WEIRD TALES). It illustrated segments of the H P Lovecraft poetry cycle FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH. All 4 of images are very small ink gems, each measuring about 1.5" x 1.25" or smaller; all 4 drawings are on a single piece of 2 ply board. {Starting bid on this was $250}

Arkham House Collector Issue 1 Part 2

Here is the text and content of a classic piece of history. The Arkham House Collector was a marketing tool that contained special, and hard to get information on HPL, along with advertising of forthcoming products of Arkham House.

Issue One Cover Text:

Arkham Collector, Number One, Summer 1967, 50 cents. The Arkham Collector is an experiment designed to replace the hitherto annual bulletin announcements. Judging by their indifferent response, we have come to feel here at Arkham House that many people who have been sent our bulletins in the past are not interested in receiving them, and it seems to us that it would be more efficient to send out announcements only to people who take the trouble to subscribe to them in this form though the Arkham Collector will not be confined to mere announcements of coming titles. Moreover, it has become too time-consuming to go through the address files year after year to check against purchases made from our lists during previous years. We propose henceforth to confine announcements to the present publication, which will be issued at least once a year, if not more often, as circumstances demand.

A few patrons of Arkham House have recently become irate about the appearance on newsstands of The Shuttered Room, by one Julia Withers. “A shattering story of Gothic Romance and terror – now an unforgettable motion picture. She was beautiful, young, and damned by the echoes of an unspoken curse.” - the typical Hollywood claptrap that is a far cry from The Shuttered Room familiar to collectors of Arkham House books.


Arkham House THE ARKHAM COLLECTOR Number One Summer 1967 Limited Edition (Approx. 2500 copies) The Arkham Collector was a small periodical published by Arkham House starting in 1967. Each issue contained announcements of upcoming books, news clips, essays, poems, story segments, and much more. As such, they offer a fascinating historical insight to Arkham House and their work. Of note, is H.P. Lovecraft always plays a central role (as with the publisher). Some of the more interesting essays on Lovecraft, first appeared in the Collector. It was treated as advertising, and as such, issues were often thrown away, so even with a circulation of around 2500, copies are hard to come by. Remainder issues of The Collector were bound and sold in book form, again decreasing the number of individual issues.
This is issue number one of The Arkham Collector, published in the Summer of 1967 at 50 cents a copy. 24 pages.
