The Fantasy Fan of August 1934

The seller states: An original vintage August 1934, Vol. 1 #12 issue of the early science fiction, digest-sized fanzine, “The Fantasy Fan” edited by Charles D. Hornig. Inspired by the professional fantastic themed magazines of the era (“Amazing Stories”, “Astounding” and “Weird Tales”) this 16 page issue features current news by Julius Schwartz (later of DC comics fame) and Mortimer Weisinger and Part 11 of “Supernatural Horror in Literature” by the great H.P. Lovecraft making it a rarity for H.P. Lovecraft collectors. The magazine is complete but because of the fragile nature of the browning pulp paper there are several chips out, none of which effect the text of the articles.

An original vintage January 1934, Vol. 2 #5 issue of the early science fiction digest-sized fanzine, “Fantasy Magazine” which was edited by Conrad H. Ruppert, Julius Schwartz (later of DC Comics fame), Raymond Palmer, Mortimer Weisinger and Forrest J Ackerman who would go on to later edit “Famous Monsters of Filmland” magazine. This issue contains Part 1 of “The Vortex World” by Raymond Palmer, “An Experiment with Time”, a short story by Forry Ackerman and Francis Flagg (creator of Buck Rogers), Edmond Hamilton on himself, reviews by Schwartz of the Universal James Whale classic, “The Invisible Man” and by Ackerman on an unproduced Paramount sf film of the future to be titled “Frigidaired for the Future”. Magazine contains 36 pages, slick paper cover and back cover with pulp paper interior pages and is in overall good/very good condition with back cover chipped and detached. An early sf magazine for collectors of “Amazing Stories” and “Weird Tales”.

An original vintage February 1934, Vol. 2 #6 issue of the early science fiction digest-sized fanzine, “Fantasy Magazine” which was edited by Conrad H. Ruppert, Julius Schwartz (later of DC Comics fame), Raymond Palmer, Mortimer Weisinger and Forrest J Ackerman who would go on to later edit “Famous Monsters of Filmland” magazine. Inspired by the professional magazines of the time, such as “Amazing Stories” and “Weird Tales”, this issue contains Part 2 of the Raymond Palmer story “The Vortex World”, “Scientific Hoaxes” by Schwartz and Milton Kaletsky, “The Ether Fibrates” by Weisinger, and “Scientifilm Theme Songs” in which Ackerman suggests the utilization of popular songs of the time with then current sci-fi and fantasy films and a long review of the Fredric March version of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Forry Ackerman. This 36 page magazine is in very good condition.

Early Ad (1937) for "The Shadow Over Innsmouth"

This excellent fanzine featured the twenty year old Robert Bloch in a humorous piece entitled, "Funtasy" wherein Bloch comments and guffaws on subjects and personalities relating to fantasy - "Zombies are people who write travel-books about Vodoo" .

Additionally there is a six-page autobiographette by Neil R. Jones a popular author of the day who primarily appeared in "Amazing Stories". Editor (and one time agent for H. P. Lovecraft) Julius Schwartz provides all the gossip and noteworthy news in the F & SF field. Speaking of Lovecraft, there is a full-page advertisement for his book "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" , "Heavy book paper cloth bound $1.00...leatherbound edition for $2.50".......anyone out there ever hear, or come across a "leatherbound" edition of this book! Telephone me immediately!!

One of the great pioneering fanzines some staining, in very good condition.

One of the classiest fanzines of its day "Fantasy Magazine" had few equals (only "The Fantasy Fan" comes to mind as the single surpassing example). Every issue was printed from type that Conrad Ruppert laboriously set by hand...unbelievable!This is your typical excellent content-ed issue with contributions by the "unquestionably" popular fantasist of the day A. Merritt - with an original short story entitled, "The Drone"; Donald Wandrei is present with a tale entitled "The Chuckler" and there is a self-interview of Murray Leinster by Will Jenkins. Note: the installment of "Cosmos" is not present.The interior paper of this issue is better than very good but as you can see from the scan the spine is chipped.

Magazine is complete and is in VG condition (no interior damage).....just has handling wear….nice supple page quality.....pages are not loose even though it looks like some pages are hanging out.... item is just very delicate. FANTASY MAGAZINE, June, 1935 Edited by Julius Schwartz This copy of "Fantasy Magazine", features the excellent four-page - "An Autobiographical Sketch of Stanley G. Weinbaum" - "I don't like Science Fiction ...there's one general weakness & one universal fallacy in the material today...most authors, even the best, seem inbued with the idea that science is a sort of savior. That's wrong; science is utterly impersonal"..........Then read why he "does" like Science Fiction. Ray Cummings is present with his very interesting revelation of "How I Came to Write Science Fiction" - "I saw an ad for Quaker Oats...." . Sorry but you'll have to win the item to get the punch line! Also Forrie Ackerman's commentary & news on SF & Fantasy in the media and as always, lists of books to read that may have eluded you from various contributors.Excellent copy printed upon pulp paper with slick paper covers.

Ok, this one is starting at $199.00. Whew. You'd think it was a lettered edition of Brian Keene's new book or something. Heh. Again, this is one that doesn't surface very often.

Ackermann and Clay Ferguson, FANTASY MAGAZINE (previously titled SCIENCE-FICTION DIGEST) is a legendary fan magazine. This issue also contains A Biographical Sketch of August Derleth by Ray Palmer.
Cheap paper browning, spine mostly split (but holding, as the staples are side-saddle), a few tiny tears.
The rear cover bears a full-page ad for the Visionary Press edition of Lovecraft's THE SHADOW OVER INNSMOUTH. A very good copy of a very rare item.

Very few of these exist, and they almost never turn up for sale.The story was written by five weird fiction authors "round-robin" style -- besides H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, three other masters of weird fiction contributed -- C.L. Moore, A. Merritt, and Frank Belknap Long. Supplied with only the title of the story, each author wrote a chapter, each picking up where the last left off.This copy is in very nice shape and is hand signed by it's editors, the legendary Julius Schwartz and Forrest J.
