This image is undated, but like Lovecraft's fascination with Conan Doyle's character, it probably coincided with the publication of Hounds of the Baskervilles after 1902 (American, New York, McClure, Phillips & Co., 1902).
Unknonw whether HPL also dressed like this when playing detective, but in 1903 his family would have had the resources to indulge him.
