The "Moses Brown School" Mentioned in Charles Dexter Ward

"...the boy's last year at the Moses Brown School, (1) when he suddenly turned from the study of the past to the study of the occult..." (2)

"...he had begun his junior year at Moses Brown School, which lies very near his home. The old main building, erected in 1819, had always charmed his youthful antiquarian sense; and the spacious park in which the academy is set appealed to his sharp eye for landscape. (3)

One wonders if Lovecraft is not wistfully contrasting this to Hope High School?

1. The Moses Brown School was located at 250 Loyd Avenue - a few blocks from Lovecraft's (then) residence at the time of writing the story.

2. p. 92, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward in The Thing on the Doorstep and Other Weird Tales, Penguin, 2001

3. Ibid. p.94
